This directory is a list of upcoming competitions for the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2018. All dates are for 2017 unless otherwise specified. Updates will be posted at www.flutetalkmagazine.com. Be sure to check online or with the contact person as details may change.

The Alto Flute Competition will be held in Reston, Virginia April 6-8, 2018. The first-round recording is due on October 10. Participants should be 18 years or older. Repertoire requirements: First Round (recorded) Telemann Fantasia No. 6 in D minor, Dolce and Allegro (1st and 2nd movements) and Alexandra Harwood’s Sonatina for Alto Flute and Piano, Buyou movement only. American Protégé International is hosting solo and concerto competitions for flutists of various ages. First place winners of the solo competition will perform in a recital at Weill Recital hall at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 2018. www.americanprotege.com/ConcertoCompetition.html.

The Associazione Flautisti Italiani’s V International Flute Competition “Severino Gazzelloni” will be held August 29-September 4 in the Auditorium San Tommaso Roccasecca (FR). The competition is open to flutists and piccolists from any country and any chamber music ensemble with the flute. The deadline to apply is July 31. Atlanta Flute Club will host the 18th Annual Young Artist Competition for fulltime high school and college students who have not reached their 30th birthday. The preliminary round is by recorded (CD) audition. Entries must be postmarked by December 16. Those selected as finalists will compete at the Flute Fair in Atlanta in February 2018. Central Ohio Flute Association will sponsor its 35th Annual Flute Competition on April 7, 2018 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first place winner in each division: Young Artist: $500, Collegiate: $400, Senior: $300, and Junior: $200. Chicago Flute Club will sponsor the 2017 Annual Student Competition on October 29, at Harper College in Palatine from 8 am to 5 pm. The competition will be open to flutists through grade 12. Prizes: Elementary Division: $100, $75, $50, Honorable Mention; Junior Division: $150, $100, $75, Honorable Mention; Senior Division: $350, $250, $150, Honorable Mention. Firebird Chamber Ensemble will host the 8th Annual Fred Moore Sr. Scholarship Competition in Lexing-ton, Kentucky on March 13, 2018. First round entries are due December 1. Repertoire for the competition will be posted on the website by August 1. Cash Awards TBA with first place winners performing with the flute choir.

Florida Flute Association Competitions will be held at the annual convention January 26-28, 2018 at the Orlando Airport Marriott Lakeside Hotel. The College Young Artist (Prizes: $400, $350, $300) and High School Young Artist (Prizes $250, $225, $200) have an application deadline of October 1.

The Flute New Music Consortium Flute Artist Competition seeks to recognize and encourage high standards of flute playing in the performance of contemporary music. Contestants will submit entries to the recorded round by November 15, 2017 for consideration. Up to four finalists will be invited to the final round of the competition, which will take place at Carter Pann’s Residency at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on March 3. The final round repertoire will also feature the premiere of a newly commissioned work for flute and recorded sound.  A cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the winner. The Flute Society of Washington (DC), Inc. will sponsor their Young Artist Competition (for flutists under age 30 as of February 1, 2018) at Sheraton Reston Hotel, Reston, Virginia on February 17, 2018. The James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition for flute students attending Berklee, Boston Conserv-atory, Longy, and the New England Conservatory will be held in January 2018 in Boston, MA, with a preliminary round in November 2017. www.pappoutsakis.org

The Mid-South Flute Society will hold three competitions at its 2018 festival, to be held April 6-7, 2018 at Middle Tennessee State University. Flutists aged 18-30 may compete in the Young Artist Competition, and there will also be a High School Competition and a College Master-class Competition. Both Young Artist and High School carry cash prizes; the College Masterclass winners will perform for the 2018 Guest Artist. For rules, deadlines and fees, please visit

Musicfest Northwest, 73rd Young Artist Competition for flute will be held in Spokane, Washington in mid-May 2018. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2018. This competition is open to flutists ages 16-29. Repertoire requirements include a solo of the flutist’s choice, sightreading, and one movement from the list of standard concertos.

National Flute Association Competitions: Young Artist, High School Soloist, Piccolo Artist, Baroque Flute Artist, Convention Performers, Flute Choir, Jazz Soloist, Masterclasses, Orchestral Audition, plus non-performance competitions will take place at the 2018 Convention on August 9-12, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando. The New Jersey Flute Society will sponsor a concerto competition in October 2017. This competition is for age 17 (college age) up to 35 years old. The repertoire for the competition is Griffes Poem and a contrasting work of the applicant’s choice. The winner will have the opportunity to perform the Griffes with a local orchestra. Deadline to apply is September 10. Entrants must provide their own accompanist.

The New York Flute Club will hold its 2018 NYFC Competition at the New York Flute Fair on February 25, 2018.  Flutists aged 18-27 are eligible to compete, and each prize winner will receive a cash award and will perform in the Competition Winners Recital on March 18, 2018. Prizes: $1,000, $600, $400. Application for entry is due by January 26, 2018. More information at: nyfluteclub.org

The South Carolina Flute Society’s annual competitions feature five categories for 2018: Young Artist (master’s, doctoral, and graduated), Collegiate Artist (undergraduates), Senior Artist (10-12th grade), Junior Artist (9th grade and under), and a Masterclass Performers Competition (undergraduate through doctoral). The first-place winners of the Solo Artist competitions will be presented with cash prizes and have the opportunity to perform at the following year’s festival. Masterclass competition winners will perform for the guest artist April 7, 2018 at the Spring Festival at Coastal Carolina University in Conway.

The Southeast Michigan Flute Association will be hosting their High School Young Artist Competition this year at their 2017 Fall Festival. The HSYAC is open to any Michigan flutist in grades 9-12 who is currently a SEMFA member and who has not previously won the first prize. The applicants must be available to perform at the SEMFA festival on November 11. Six finalists will be selected on the basis of recorded auditions. Judges will award, at their discretion, first, second, and third cash prizes in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100. The first prize winner will also perform in a masterclass for featured guest artist, Dionne Jackson, at the festival. For more information: www.semfa.org

Texas Flute Society Competitions: 7th Donna Marie Haire Competition
for school aged flutists who will graduate during or after 2017-2018 school year. The competition will be held May 19, 2018 at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. Prizes; $1000, $500. Deadline: March 1, 2018.

The Texas Flute Society Festival Masterclass Competitions for college and adult masterclasses, high school solo and junior high solo will be held on May 18-19, 2018 at Texas Woman’s University, Denton. The Upper Midwest Flute Association announces its Young Artist Competition for 2018. Alternating yearly between national and local applicants, the 2018 competition is open to flutists ages 18-30 who are residents or students in MN, WI, IA, ND, or SD. Preliminary auditions are by CD recording, due February 1, 2018; required repertoire TBA. Finalists will perform at UMFA’s Flute Fest in Minneapolis/St. Paul in early April 2018. Prize amounts are $600, $400, and $200. See

Woodbridge Flute Choir is sponsoring its 10th Concerto and Scholarship Competition for flutists aged 14-18 as of January 15, 2018. National Youth Orchestra NYO2
Carnegie Hall has announced the names of 78 young musicians selected from across the country for the second season of NYO2, a three-week intensive summer program for outstanding instrumentalists ages 14-17. NYO2 is an extension of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Flutists selected for NYO2 are Khoi Dinh, (Los Angeles), Scott Quirk, (Simi Valley, CA), Shreya Narayan, (Cottage Grove, MN). After a residency in Purchase, NY, the group will perform in New York City and Philadelphia.
