The 10th Domenico Cimarosa International Flute Competition will be held in Averso, Italy on December 6-8, 2017. The Rotary Club di Aversa Terra Normanna will award prize money of 1500, 500, and 250 Euros. The competition is held every two years.
American Protégé International is hosting solo and concerto competitions for flutists of various ages. First place winners of the solo competition will perform in a recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 2017.
The Associazione Flautisti Italiani’s IV International Flute Competition “Severino Gazzelloni” will be held August 29-September 4, 2016 in the Auditorium San Tommaso Roccasecca (FR). The competition is open to flutists and piccoloists from any country and any Chamber Music ensemble with the flute. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2016. Atlanta Flute Club will host the 17th Annual Young Artist Competition for full-time high school and college students who have not reached their 30th birthday. The preliminary round is by recorded (CD) audition. Entries must be postmarked by December 16, 2016. Those selected as finalists will compete at the Flute Fair in Atlanta in February 2017. Prizes: $1000 plus a recital at the 2018 Flute Fair, $700, $300. [email protected]
Central Ohio Flute Association will sponsor its 34th annual Flute Competition on April 1, 2017 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first place winner of each division: Young Artist: $500, Collegiate: $400, Senior: $300, and Junior: $200. Winners may be invited to play in the guest artist masterclass at the Flute Festival. Deadline: February 1, 2017, [email protected]
Chicago Flute Club will sponsor the 2016 Annual Student Competition on a Sunday in late October or the first half of November. The competition will be open to flutists through grade 12. Prizes: Elementary Division: $100, $75, $50, Honorable Mention; Junior Division: $150, $100, $75, Honorable Mention; Senior Division: $300 plus $100 gift card, $200, $100, Honorable Mention. Complete information on date, time, and location of the competition will be available in June in the summer issue of the Pipeline and on the CFC website.
Chicago Flute Club announced the next biennial Walfrid Kujala International Piccolo Competition. Open to all piccoloists age 18 or over, excluding high school students. Prizes of $1,000, $500, $250, and $100. Final round date TBA, sometime in March/April 2017. Preliminary recordings due Feb. 1, 2017.
Firebird Chamber Ensemble will host the 7th Annual Fred Moore Sr. Scholarship Competition in Lexington, Kentucky on March 18, 2017. First round entries are due December 1, 2016. Florida Flute Association Competitions will be held at the annual convention January 27-29, 2017 at the Orlando Airport Marriott. The College Young Artist (Prizes: $400, $350, $300) and High School Young Artist (Prizes: $250, $225, $200) have an application deadline of October 1, 2016.
The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia (FSGP) will host its Young Artist Competition on March 17, 2017 at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. This competition is open to flutists ages 18-30 (as of March 18, 2017). Prizes: $1,000, $500, $250. The Preliminary Recorded Round submission deadline is January 20, 2017. Preliminary Recorded Round Repertoire is: Sonata in A Minor for Flute Solo by C.P.E. Bach: Mvt. I Poco adagio and Mvt. II Allegro (Edition: Universal); Trois pièces pour flûte by Pierre Octave Ferroud: III – Toan-Yan (La fête du Double-Cine) (Edition: Salabert). Final Round Repertoire is: Preliminary Recorded Round Pieces plus the finalist’s choice of one of the following (recent “Winners, NFA Newly Published Music Competition”): Sonata for Flute and Piano by Samuel Adler; Sonata (Three Lakes) for Flute and Piano by Daniel Dorff; Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano by Eric Ewazen. The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia and the San Diego Flute Guild have chosen to use the same repertoire for their respective 2017 Young Artist Competitions so enter one or both. The Flute Society of Washington (DC), Inc. will sponsor their Young Artist Competition (For flutists under age 30 as of February 1, 2017) at Sheraton Reston Hotel, Reston, Virginia on February 18, 2017. Prizes $1000, $750, $500. Application and recording due November 1, 2016. See web for repertoire requirements.
The James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition for flute students attending Berklee, Boston Conservatory, Boston University, Longy, and the New England Conservatory will be held in January 2017 in Boston, MA, with a preliminary round in November 2016 (dates TBD).
Mid-South Flute Society Competitions will hold three competitions on March 31 - April 1, 2017 at the University of Southern Mississippi. The Young Artist Competition is for flutists age 18-30. See website for repertoire. Prizes: $1000, $500, $300. Deadline: November 21, 2016. Mid-South also hosts competitions for High School Soloist Grades 9-12. Prizes: $150, $100, $50 and competitions to perform in masterclasses.
Musicfest Northwest, Young Artist: Flute. May 15, 2017. Deadline: March 1, 2017. For flutists aged 16-29. Requirements: solo of flutist’s choice, sightreading, and one movement from list of standard concertos. Spokane.
National Flute Association Competitions: Young Artist, High School Soloist, Piccolo Artist, Baroque Flute Artist, Convention Performers, Flute Choir (Professional, Collegiate, High School), Jazz Soloist, Master-classes, Orchestral Audition, Non-performance (Arts Venture Competition, Flute Choir composition, Graduate Research, Newly Published Music), August 10-13, 2017 in Minneapolis. The New Jersey Flute Society will sponsor a concerto competition at their Flute Fair on October 16, 2016 for high school and college students to perform with local orchestras. Participants should have graduated from a New Jersey high school or are currently attending a New Jersey university. The repertoire for the competition is the Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto in C major, RV 443 or the Mozart Concerto in G, K. 313. Deadline to apply is September 16, 2016. Entrants must provide their own accompanist.
The New York Flute Club will sponsor its 2017 NY Flute Club Competition at the Flute Fair on March/April 2017. Flutists aged 18-27 are eligible to compete, and each prize winner will receive a cash award and will perform in the Competition Winners Recital in April, 2017. Prizes: $1000, $600, $400. Application for entry is due by February 2017.
The Respighi Prize 6th International Competition for composers and soloists is open to young composers and soloists under the age of 40 who are currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a conservatory or college. The prize is a performance with the Chamber Orchestra of New York during the 2018-2019 season. Deadline: June 30, 2016.
The San Diego Flute Guild (SDFG) will host its Young Artist Competition in April 2017.This competition is open to flutists ages 18-30. Prizes: $1000, $500, $250. The South Carolina Flute Society's annual competitions feature five categories for 2017: Young Artist (master’s, doctoral, and graduated), Collegiate Artist (undergraduates), Senior Artist (10-12th grade), Junior Artist (9th grade and under), and a Masterclass Performers competition (undergraduate through doctoral). The first-place winners of the Solo Artist competitions will be presented with cash prizes and have the opportunity to perform at the following year's festival. Masterclass competition winners will perform for our guest artist April 8, 2017 at the Spring Festival in Greenville.
The Southeast Michigan Flute Association will sponsor the Ervin Monroe Young Artists Competition on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016. This biennial competition was established in 2008 to honor and commemorate the 40-year tenure of Ervin Monroe as principal flutists of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The competition is open to any Michigan flutist aged 30 or younger who has not previously won first prize. “Michigan Flutist” is defined as a flutist currently residing and studying in the state of Michigan, or a student who previously resided in Michigan and graduated from a Michigan high school, but is currently attending college out of state. The applicants must be available to perform at the SEMFA Fall Festival. Six finalists will be selected on the basis of recorded auditions. Judges will award, at their discretion, cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $200. The first and second prize winners will perform in a masterclass for the featured guest artist, George Pope, at the SEMFA festival. Recorded round is due October 1, 2016. Southeast Michigan Flute Association will sponsor the High School Young Artist Competition on November 12, 2016. The competition is open to any Michigan flutist in grades 9-12 who is currently a SEMFA member and has not previously won the first prize. The deadline to enter is October 15, 2016. Southeast Michigan Flute Association will sponsor the Rachel Stornant Junior Artist Competition on November 12, 2016. The competition is open to any Michigan resident who has not completed the 8th grade at the time of the final round of the competition. The deadline to enter is October 15, 2016. Texas Flute Society Competitions: 5th Donna Marie Haire Competition for school aged flutists who will graduate during or after 2016-2017 school year. The competition will be held May 20, 2017 at a location TBD. Prizes; $1000, $500. Deadline: March 1, 2016.
32th Myrna Brown Competition will be held May 18-19, 2017 at a location TBD. No age limit. Prizes: $1200, $500, $250. Deadline: February 15, 2017.
The Texas Flute Society Festival Masterclass Competitions for college and adult masterclasses, high school solo and junior high solo will be held in May 2017 at Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas. Recorded round: flute solo of choice. Prize: Opportunity to perform in masterclass at Texas Flute Society. Deadline: March 1, 2017. [email protected]
The Upper Midwest Flute Association announces its annual Young Artist Competition, for flutists ages 18-30. Alternating yearly between national and local applicants, the 2017 competition is open all flutists. Preliminary auditions are by CD recording due February 1, 2017. The finalists will perform at UMFA’s Flute Fest in Minneapolis/St. Paul, in early April 2017. Prize amounts are $600, $400, and $200. Woodbridge Flute Choir is sponsoring its Ninth Concerto and Scholarship Competition for flutists aged 14-18 as of January 15, 2017. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship award and perform the concerto with the Woodbridge Flute Choir in March 2017. See website for repertoire suggestions. Deadline: January 4, 2017. The World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), based in Geneva, Switzerland, was founded in 1957 and provides a database for more than 120 of the world’s leading music competitions. (www.wfimc.org) The most prestigious flute competitions are listed below with the date of an upcoming competition or with the last date the competition was held.
